Shoppers are starting to hand parts of the buying journey to AI assistants. Instead of opening ten tabs, they ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Google AI Mode to find “a waterproof hiking jacket under ₹6,000 that can arrive by Friday”, compare a shortlist and, in some cases, complete the purchase. This is agentic commerce. You do not need to rebuild your store for it, but you do need product information, policies and checkout that a machine can read as clearly as a person can.
What agentic commerce means for a growing store
An AI shopping agent is an assistant that can search, compare and act on a shopper’s behalf. It reads product data, prices, stock, delivery times, reviews and return rules, then recommends options that fit the request. Where a platform supports it, the agent can also place the order through the merchant’s checkout, with the shopper approving the payment.
Two open standards are shaping this. The Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), developed by OpenAI and Stripe, describes how agents and merchants exchange product, order and payment information. Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), announced in January 2026, covers discovery, carts and checkout across Google AI Mode and Gemini. Availability is still limited by country, platform and merchant approval, so for most businesses the practical priority today is being understood and recommended, not building a custom integration.

Treat your product data as the new shop window
An agent cannot admire your photography; it reads attributes. Every product should have a clear title, a factual description, brand, price, currency, availability, variants such as size and colour, and a GTIN or manufacturer part number where one exists. Missing or inconsistent fields make it harder for an assistant to match your product to a specific request.
Keep one accurate source of product data and send it everywhere: your website, Google Merchant Center and any marketplace or platform feed. Prices and stock must match on the feed and on the product page, because mismatches cause disapprovals and lost trust. Shopify, WooCommerce and BigCommerce stores can usually manage this through their official channel apps instead of manual spreadsheets.
Answer the questions an AI agent will ask
Shoppers give agents detailed requirements: material, dimensions, compatibility, ingredients, care instructions, warranty, delivery speed and suitability for a particular use. Write these facts as plain text on the product page, not only inside images or downloadable PDFs. A short specification table and a concise “who this is for” paragraph help both people and machines.
Include the comparison points your customers mention most. If people often ask whether a product fits a certain phone, works for sensitive skin or suits a small balcony, answer that directly. Genuine customer reviews that describe real use add helpful, independent detail that assistants often summarise.
Make policies and trust signals machine-readable
Delivery cost, delivery time, return window and refund conditions are often the deciding factors in an agent’s recommendation. Publish them clearly and keep them consistent across your site and feeds. Add Product structured data with Offer details, shipping details and a merchant return policy so search systems can read them without guessing.
Strengthen the signals that show you are a real, reliable seller: accurate business contact details, an Organization schema, a secure checkout, visible customer support options and consistent reviews on trusted platforms. AI assistants are designed to avoid sending shoppers to uncertain sellers, so trust is no longer only a design consideration.
Prepare checkout and operations for agent-driven orders
Reduce the friction an agent or shopper meets at checkout: allow guest checkout, offer common payment methods, show the final price including tax and delivery, and avoid surprise pop-ups or forced account creation. If your platform or payment provider offers an agentic checkout option, review its eligibility, fees and data-sharing terms before switching it on.
Check the operational side too. Orders from new channels must flow into your usual fulfilment, stock and customer service processes, and your team should know how to recognise and support them. Start with a small range of well-documented best sellers rather than your whole catalogue.

Measure AI-driven discovery before you invest more
In Google Analytics 4, track referral traffic from sources such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and gemini.google.com, and compare its conversion rate and order value with other channels. Use Merchant Center reports to monitor free listing performance and product data issues.
Each month, ask several AI assistants the shopping questions your customers would ask and note which products and competitors they recommend. If your products are missing, the cause is usually incomplete data, unclear policies or weak reviews. Fix those foundations first; they improve Google Shopping, marketplaces and your own conversion rate at the same time.
Frequently asked questions
What is agentic commerce?
Agentic commerce is shopping in which an AI assistant searches, compares and sometimes completes a purchase on a shopper’s behalf. The shopper sets the requirements and approves the payment, while the agent reads product data, prices, policies and reviews to make recommendations.
Do small online stores need to integrate ACP or UCP now?
Usually not yet. Access to agentic checkout is limited by country, platform and approval. Most small stores benefit more from complete product feeds, accurate structured data, clear policies and strong reviews, which help them get recommended now and make a later integration easier.
Which platforms support agentic commerce?
Major ecommerce and payment platforms, including Shopify, BigCommerce and Stripe, have been adding support for agent-driven discovery and checkout, but features and regions vary. Check your platform’s current documentation and Merchant Center account for the options available to you.
How do I know if AI assistants recommend my products?
Track referrals from AI assistants in Google Analytics 4 and run a monthly set of realistic shopping prompts in ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Mode and Perplexity. Record which products, brands and stores appear, and how often yours are included.
