How to get your business cited in Google AI Mode and AI answers

A practical GEO and AEO guide to help your website become a trusted source in Google AI Mode, AI Overviews, ChatGPT search and other AI answers.

More searches now end with an AI-written answer instead of a list of ten blue links. Google AI Mode, AI Overviews, ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Gemini all summarise the web and then show a small set of sources. For a business, the new goal is simple to state and harder to earn: be one of the pages those answers trust and cite. This guide explains, in plain terms, what generative engine optimisation (GEO) and answer engine optimisation (AEO) actually involve, and the practical steps that make your website easier to quote.

What changed in AI search in 2026

AI answers have moved from an experiment to a normal part of searching. Google’s AI Mode handles longer, conversational questions and follow-ups, while AI Overviews appear above regular results for many informational searches. In October 2026 Google said it would show links more often and more prominently inside AI Mode, and widen the carousel of links below AI Overviews. That is welcome, but each answer still features only a handful of sources.

The effect for most businesses is a split between being cited and being invisible. A page can rank on the first page and still be left out of the AI summary, while a well-structured page from a smaller brand can be quoted because it answers the exact question clearly. Treat AI answers as a new shelf in the shop: there is less space, so the products on it need to be the clearest and most trusted.

There is no secret AI ranking switch

Google states that there are no extra technical requirements or special markup needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in normal Search. The same foundations still apply: crawlable pages, helpful content written for people, and a site that demonstrates experience, expertise and trust.

Be careful with anyone selling a hidden “AI ranking” trick, an llms.txt file as a guaranteed fix, or mass-produced pages written only for machines. Scaled, low-value content is still treated as spam. GEO is best understood as good SEO done precisely: making it easy for both people and AI systems to find, understand and verify the answer you provide.

Write answer-first pages that AI systems can quote

AI systems pull short passages, not whole pages. Put the direct answer near the top of each section, in two to four sentences, then add the detail, examples and exceptions underneath. Use the customer’s own question as the heading, such as “How much does a website maintenance plan cost?”, rather than a vague label like “Pricing information”.

Give the answer something only you can provide: real price ranges, timelines, process steps, local conditions, comparisons, original data or lessons from your own projects. Generic advice is easy to summarise from any source; specific, verifiable detail is a reason to cite yours. Keep each page focused on one topic, use descriptive subheadings, lists and simple tables where they help, and date and update pages when facts change.

Prove that you are the business behind the answer

AI answers favour sources they can connect to a real, consistent entity. Make sure your business name, address, phone number, services and areas served match across your website, Google Business Profile, social profiles and important directories. A clear About page, named authors or team members, case studies, certifications and genuine reviews all help confirm who you are.

Mentions on other reputable websites matter too. Industry publications, local news, partner pages, podcasts and community forums are part of the material AI systems learn from and cite. Aim for a few accurate, relevant mentions that describe what you actually do, rather than a large number of low-quality links.

Make technical access easy for search and AI crawlers

Check that important pages are indexable, load quickly, render their main text in HTML and are linked from your navigation or sitemap. Avoid placing key answers only inside images, PDFs or scripts that are hard to read. Review robots.txt so you are not accidentally blocking Googlebot, Bingbot or the search crawlers used by AI assistants, such as OpenAI’s OAI-SearchBot, if you want to appear in those answers.

Use structured data that matches what visitors can see: Organization and LocalBusiness for your business details, Article for guides, Product for items you sell, and BreadcrumbList for site structure. Structured data does not guarantee a citation, but it removes ambiguity about who you are and what a page contains. Remember that Google’s nosnippet and max-snippet controls also limit how your content can be used in AI features.

Measure AI visibility honestly

Traffic from AI features in Google is included in the Web search type of the Search Console performance report, so watch impressions and clicks for the pages that answer questions. In Google Analytics 4, create a simple channel or exploration for referrals from sources such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com.

Add a monthly manual check. Choose 20 to 30 real questions your customers ask, run them in Google AI Mode, ChatGPT search and Perplexity, and record whether your brand is mentioned, whether your page is linked, and which competitors appear. The trend over several months is more useful than any single result, because AI answers change between sessions and locations. Most importantly, connect this work to enquiries and sales, not only visibility.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between SEO, GEO and AEO?

SEO helps pages rank in traditional search results. Generative engine optimisation (GEO) and answer engine optimisation (AEO) focus on being understood, trusted and cited inside AI-generated answers, such as Google AI Mode, AI Overviews and ChatGPT search. They share the same foundations, with GEO and AEO placing extra emphasis on clear, quotable answers and entity trust.

Do I need special schema markup to appear in AI Overviews?

No. Google says there is no special markup required for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Structured data is still useful because it clarifies your business and page content, but it must match what visitors can see on the page.

How long does it take to get cited in AI answers?

There is no fixed timeline. Well-indexed sites that improve existing pages often see changes within a few weeks to a few months. New sites usually need longer, because AI systems rely on signals of trust that build over time.

Will AI answers reduce my website traffic?

Some simple informational searches now get answered without a click. However, visitors who do click from an AI answer have often already compared options, so the traffic can be better qualified. Focus on questions that lead to a decision, and measure enquiries as well as visits.

Make it actionable

Your next three steps

  1. List 20 real customer questions and check which ones your website answers clearly in the first lines of a section.
  2. Rewrite your three most important service or product pages with answer-first headings, specific details and up-to-date facts.
  3. Run the same questions in Google AI Mode, ChatGPT search and Perplexity each month and track mentions, links and enquiries.
